Enhancing ‘Investability’: Structuring Guarantees and Catalytic First Loss Capital

Thursday, September 22, 2016 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM PDT

In the growing field of impact investment, the opportunities for strong social and environmental impact returns are often perceived as carrying higher financial risk. When digging down into a specific investment theme—whether Native American communities, sustainable fisheries, or financial inclusion—funders often find that creative financing is needed to make a deal ‘investable.' Where conventional sources of capital may be wary of the perceived risk-return profiles associated with this approach, motivated philanthropies are able to lower risk to make ’ the impossible’ - possible! As mission-driven institutions, foundations can help shift the conversations around risk by lowering barriers for investors. Impact investment mechanisms such as guarantees and first loss reserves can catalyze additional capital that may not be deployed otherwise, broadening philanthropic impact far beyond grantmaking.

Please join Confluence Philanthropy for a webinar discussion about structuring guarantees and first loss reserves and hear from practitioners about their experience and motivations for playing this role in the capital stack.

Speakers Include:

  • Jen Astone, Executive Director, Swift Foundation
  • John Goldstein, Former Co-Founder, Imprint Capital, Goldman Sachs Asset Management
  • Andrea Nemtin, President & CEO, Inspirit Foundation (Moderator)
  • Carol Pickering, Program Officer, Dietel Partners

Please contact Sarah DeNicola, Membership Program Manager, with any questions.
