Next Webinar In Series: Fisheries Webinar 2: Doubling Philanthropic Impact: Cash and Other Below Market Rate Investment Vehicles

Learn how to harness the
power of cash through mission-related investing in Community
Development Financial Institutions (CDFI’s). Our guest speakers will discuss the various cash vehicles for
investment, including cash deposits, PRI, and how grants can provide capacity
to these organizations.
Speakers:
- Rachel Strader, Program Officer, Marine Conservation Initiative, The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation will moderate the call.
- Dana Lanza, CEO of Confluence Philanthropy will discuss and introduce cash as an investment vehicle.
- Myla Reese, Regional Vice President and Managing Director of Louisiana Operations, SeedCo Financial will
speak having increased the access to credit for local fishermen in the
gulf coast region since the fisheries industry was decimated by recent
disasters. Seedco has approved over 120 loans of more than $6.6 million
to commercial
fishermen and dock owners by leveraging than $8.5 million in
State-funded grants to nearly 550 small business owners in the fisheries
industry.
Fisheries Webinar Series: An Overview Confluence
Philanthropy is pleased to announce the MRI in Sustainable Fisheries
and Food Systems Webinar series, as part of a year-long initiative to
build better understanding and collaboration among Foundations in this
area of impact investing. Confluence Members believe that fisheries
represent an important and underserved area with the potential for
innovative mission-related investment. We will explore opportunities
through four educational webinars, one during each quarter of the year.
The first webinar will occur on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 1 PM EST.
Experts will speak to the themes described below.
Concluded:
- Webinar 1-MRI in Sustainable Fisheries & Food Systems: A Catalyst for Change; An overview of mission-related investment
through the lenses of fisheries and food system case studies.
Investment examples will include cash and grants, program-related
investments, and private equity.
Upcoming:
- Webinar 2-Doubling Philanthropic Impact: Cash and Other Below Market Rate Investment Vehicles: Learn how to harness the
power of cash through mission-related investing in Community
Development Financial Institutions (CDFI’s). Our guest speakers will discuss the various cash vehicles for
investment, including cash deposits, PRI, and how grants can provide capacity
to these organizations.
- Webinar 3-Scaling up through Program-Related Investing: Explore
how program related investments can provide desperately needed loans
and debt capital to fisheries and food enterprises. How are these sorts
of PRIs structured? What is the landscape for using intermediaries?

- Webinar 4- What About Equity? Above Market Rate Returns in Sustainable Food and Fisheries:
Many might believe that investors must sacrifice financial return for
social impact in the sustainable fisheries and food systems market,
however, there are some examples that contradict this notion. Let's
learn more about existing investment opportunities, how these were
constructed, and where markets may be headed. (April date and speakers to be determined)
For webinars 2, 3, 4 Confluence will distribute announcements and other information about the events as the dates approach.
Dive Deeper in Regional Round Table Discussion:
In
conjunction with the webinars, Confluence and partner organizations
will host several regional round-table events to delve deeper into the
question of financing in sustainable fisheries and food systems.
Slated venues include the September EGA Retreat at Mohonk Mountain
House; San Francisco; and Boston. Additional locations may be
announced. Please stay tuned for more information, or let us know if you
