Climate change presents real risks to society and the economy, but it also offers many opportunities. The mainstream investment industry has generally failed to consider the magnitude of the risk posed by climate change over the next 10-20 years. Climate aware and ready investors will have the competitive edge. With COP21 around the corner, this issue has never been more timely.
Mercer’s recent Investing in a Time of Climate report represents a leap forward in the assessment of climate change risks and opportunities for investor portfolios. The report, together with an associated climate-risk framework, considers four climate scenarios (to 2050) developed to guide potential outcomes in an uncertain future, which reflect emissions, physical damages, and policy developments. It examines these scenarios through the lenses of four climate risk factors to estimate the climate impact on potential returns from a diversified portfolio of investments, and includes detail across equity industry sectors and asset classes. The modeling framework developed for this report is now available to investors prepared to acknowledge climate change as a risk with a clear financial dimension rather than an unquantifiable uncertainty. This framework is indispensable to informing risk management, investment planning and governance actions.
Please join Confluence Philanthropy for a webinar discussion with Mercer representatives, moderated by Amplifier Strategies. The session will cover where climate thinking is needed and where philanthropy can push the dial, and will provide ample time for Q & A with our expert panelists.
