WEBINAR: Protecting the Protectors: Aligning Investment Strategies for Native American Communities

Thanks in large part to the Standing Rock water protectors, issues facing indigenous communities have gained renewed visibility and urgency on a national scale. But as the looming re-approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline suggests, the struggle for Native sovereignty will continue with investors poised to play a role that extends well beyond DAPL divestment. Confluence is pleased to announce the release of a new step-by-step resource guide,  Protecting the Protectors: Aligning Investment Strategies for Native American Communities, that is designed to help mission-driven asset owners better manage investments in publicly held companies and funds that impact Native American communities.

Impact investors and grantmaking organizations can choose from a variety of tools to positively effect change within Native American (or tribal) communities.* Two commonly used options —screening and shareholder engagement—can be applied with a lens benefiting tribal communities. Confluence’s new guide presents these methodologies, along with examples of how they have been used by both Native and non-Native organizations active in the field. Join us for a webinar that will detail the findings of the report (which is available for free to all Confluence members), and highlight the experiences of leading practitioners.

Speakers include:

  • Jen Astone, Executive Director, Swift Foundation
  • Steven Heim, Director, ESG Research & Shareholder Engagement, Boston Common Asset Management
  • Jeff Pace, Director of Finance and Operations & CFO, The Christensen Fund
  • Y. Elaine Rasmussen, Chief Impact Strategist/Philanthropic Services, Social Impact Strategies Group (Moderator)

*This guide focuses on communities within the geographic boundaries of the United States, and on those Indigenous Peoples broadly defined as Native American; however, many of the principles and methodologies shared in this guidebook can be applied to investments that impact Indigenous communities around the world.

This event is for funders (foundations, family offices, and individual donors), Confluence Advisors Bay Members, and invited institutional investors, and is not open to grantseeking organizations or students.
