Lifting Your Voice: How Philanthropy Can Navigate Lobbying and Advocacy

Lifting Your Voice: How Philanthropy Can Navigate Lobbying and Advocacy

Thursday, July 13, 2017

Updated Time: 12:30 - 2:00pm PT

In our chaotic political environment, many members of our community are reaffirming their commitment to engage in advocacy. But the rules are not always clear for nonprofit entities: when can a public or private foundation speak out, without jeopardizing their nonprofit status? What counts as lobbying and what are the rules about tracking and disclosing such activity? What are the potential risks and benefits for philanthropic institutions considering advocacy work in addition to or beyond making grants that support other nonprofits to lobby?

Join Confluence Philanthropy, U.S. Impact Investing Alliance and Alliance for Justice's Bolder Advocacy Initiative for a training that will tackle these important, thorny issues and illuminate ways forward for philanthropies to flex their political muscle in support of their values and in accordance with legal requirements.

Featured speakers: • Nikhil Pillai, Counsel, Bolder Advocacy Initiative, Alliance for Justice

  • John Cochrane, Senior Associate, U.S. Impact Investing Alliance
