Without consistent legal protections at a national level, Indigenous leaders are leveraging market-based advocacy and strategic alliances with concerned shareholders to ensure respect for their rights and wellbeing. This panel will explore how the Gwich’in Steering Committee has successfully leveraged corporate engagement to protect Iizhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit (The Sacred Place Where Life Began), located on the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, from oil and gas development.
Join us as Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee, Bernadette Demientieff, discusses her experience engaging with financial institutions and insurance companies to protect this sacred place. To date, 29 global financial institutions – including every major U.S. and Canadian bank – have committed to protecting the Coastal Plain. Additionally, and with ongoing engagement, 14 international insurance companies have stepped forward with commitments. Moderated by Kate Finn, Executive Director of First Peoples Worldwide, this panel will invite attendees to consider how shareholder advocacy can align with the rights and values of Indigenous Peoples to address global challenges such as solving for climate change and ensuring a just transition.
