Briefing on the Digital Age, Democracy and Disinformation

In 2024, more than half of the world’s population will head to the polls. That’s more than 4 billion people across 50 countries engaging in democracy’s defining act. They will do so in the context of a rapidly evolving digital landscape that both empowers modern democracy and threatens to undercut it. Across that digital landscape, citizens have constant access to information—but also to misinformation and disinformation. They can engage for change, educate themselves, and advocate in new and different ways—but their digital experiences are shaped by algorithms that often deepen siloes and insulate echo chambers. They can connect with like-minded people, parties, candidates, and movements—but they are potentially vulnerable to actors seeking to exploit division, erode trust, and even undercut democracy itself.

Given this urgency, we're not wasting any time engaging several of the field’s top thinkers for a virtual conversation on February 28 to explore the pivotal roles philanthropy can play in safeguarding democratic principles around the world while mitigating the challenges digital systems and disinformation bring. Moderated by Isaiah Castilla, a managing director at Arabella, our panel will feature:
