Confluence Announces a Fresh Mission to Usher in a New Decade at Our Tenth Anniversary Gathering

In 2020, at the launch of a new decade, Confluence Philanthropy celebrates our tenth anniversary. The Board of Directors chose Puerto Rico to serve as the springboard for a retreat-styled Practitioners Gathering to mark these milestones in a warm, intimate, and poetic setting. The Gathering provided the community a space for sharing, group reflection, and calls to action.

Looking toward a climate-impacted future and the social, political, and financial challenges we face over this next decade, we recognize that we all must move beyond dialogue to tangible action.

Within this context, Confluence’s leadership used this anniversary Gathering to announce our fresh mission statement, embodying honest recognition for a new epoch that will determine the fates of uncountable species and our human way of life:

Confluence Philanthropy’s mission is to transform the practice of investing by aligning capital with our community’s values of sustainability, equity, and justice.

To advance the new mission, we stand committed to our five strategic goals:

  • To build a network of practice and pioneering leadership through education, outreach, and peer-to-peer learning;

  • To increase the capacity of investors and investment managers to practice values-aligned investing by providing friendship, resources, and technical assistance;

  • To transform the investment industry by fostering systemic thinking and effective cross-sector partnerships, thereby creating a space in which innovation can emerge;

  • To build momentum by fostering collaboration among our peer networks and colleagues, and to inspire the field by example; and

  • To provide our members with a strong organization, with the capacity to effectively advance Confluence Philanthropy’s mission and goals.

Yet amidst these promises, we must acknowledge this very moment. In the week immediately following the Gathering the world has nearly stalled to halt, levelled by the global spread of the coronavirus and a market crash the size of which birthed the impact investing movement as we now know it, in 2008. Indeed, we have rounded another curve in our collective spiral, even as progressive investors are more committed than ever to driving positive social and environmental outcomes.

We hope that the 2020 Gathering will be regarded as pivotal for our members and all who joined us. It included resounding rallying cries for climate solutions, for racial equity, for the intersectionality of climate and gender issues, among other effective strategies. Substantive thinking is brewing about decarbonizing the banking industry; and separately, how to hold one another accountable with respect and embrace. None present will ever forget the tearful testimonies of San Juan’s Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, or that of Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., President of Hip Hop Caucus, instructing us to “Fund the Movements!”

We look forward to deepening relationships with our members as we accelerate the new mission together. As always, we welcome your input, feedback, and reflection. We are only as strong as our ability to undergird and bring coherence to this uniquely inspiring community.
